Be aware that mail sent to Argentina may not arrive or may arrive late. Sending mail home is not a problem, it is cheap and efficient. Letters from Argentina take 10-14 days to get to Europe and the USA. Rates for letters up to 20 g to Europe and USA: US$1.80, up to 150 g, US$10. Post can be sent from the
(post office) or from private postal service
, through any shop displaying the purple sign. The post service is reliable, but for
assured delivery, register everything.
Small parcels of up to 2 kg can be sent from all post offices. Larger parcels must be sent from the town's main post office, where your parcel will be examined by customs to make sure that the contents are as stated on your customs form, and taken to
Encomiendas Internacionales
for posting. Any local
can tell you where to go. Customs usually open in the morning only. Having parcels sent to Argentina incurs a customs tax, which depends on the value of the package, and all incoming packages are opened by customs. If when you are in Buenos Aires you are sent anything large or electronic, it will get stopped at Ezeiza International Airport Customs, you will then have to go there, wade through paperwork for about 2 hrs and then possibly pay a duty tax. Try to avoid being sent anything really valuable. Poste restante is available in every town's main post office, fee US$1.50.
