Users of drugs, even of soft ones, without medical prescription should be particularly careful, as Argentina imposes heavy penalties - up to 10 years' imprisonment - for even possession of such substances, and tends to make little distinction between marijuana and hard drugs. The planting of drugs on travellers, by traffickers or the police, is not unknown. If offered drugs on the street, make no response at all and keep walking.

Note that people who roll their own cigarettes are often suspected of carrying drugs and can be subjected to intensive searches. It is advisable to stick to commercial brands of cigarettes.
