Sierras de San Luis
Northeast of the city of San Luis, there's a beautiful range of hills which remains little known to travellers, and where there are just two frequently visited resorts, the small town of El Trapiche and the reservoir in La Florida. The rest of this vast hilly region is sparsely inhabited, with quiet villages which maintain old rural traditions and a simple way of life. The eastern edge of the sierras and the upper valleys and high pampas around Carolina can be visited by taking Route 9 north from San Luis. Regular buses go up to Carolina and Intihuasi.
El TrapicheEl Trapiche is an attractive village set on the Río Trapiche in wooded hills. There are summer homes, hotels and picnic sites, and some good easy walks to
Los Siete Cajones
on the sparkling waters of Río Grande and 6 km west, to pleasant surroundings of rivers
Virorco
and
De las Aguilas
.
Carolina is a former gold-mining town founded in 1792 at the foot of Cerro Tomolasta (2018 m) which offers great views from its summit. It's a picturesque village with stone houses
and a goldmine, which can be visited through San Luis tour operators .
The local
Huellas agency
, dresses
you up as a miner and guides you along a 300 m tunnel for about 1½ hours (English spoken), and provides tools in case you suddenly feel the desire to dig. From Carolina a rough track leads north over the Cuesta Larga to San Francisco del Monte de Oro, on Route 146. Two other roads in better condition cross attractive scenery of undulating pampas and volcanic peaks to Libertador General San Martín or to La Toma.
