Around La Plata
Eight kilometres northwest of the city, the República de los Niños www.republica.laplata.gov.ar is Eva Perón's legacy, built under the first Perón administration. A delightful children's village, with scaled down castles, oriental palaces, boating lake, cafés and even a little train. It's a fun place for families to picnic.
This area of the country has some lovely rural accommodation. A delightful option close to La Plata is the Casa de Campo La China www.casadecampo lachina.com.ar, a charming 1930s adobe house set in eucalyptus woods, with beautifully furnished accommodation and far-reaching views. Parque Costero Sur Reserve and Estancia Juan Gerónimo
Parque Costero Sur is a large nature reserve 110 km south of La Plata, and 160 km south of Buenos Aires - just two hours' drive away. Declared a UNESCO Biosphere Site in 1997, it extends along 70 km of the coastline of Bahía Samborombón, and was created to protect a wide range of birds that come here to breed. There are several estancias inside the reserve including the beautiful 1920s Tudor-style Estancia Juan Gerónimo www.juangeronimo.com.ar. The 4000-ha estancia is magnificently situated right on the coast, and from here you can enjoy walking or horse riding in total peace and quiet - you can ride for three days here without ever repeating a route. The estancia is more of a village than a house, with a collection of Tudor-style buildings in the lovely grounds, including a tea house, a little cabin, stables and a rural school. The main house has a wonderful old library with an extensive collection of books on pre-Colombian culture, as well as literature in French, English and German. Its 11 guest bedrooms are beautifully decorated but best of all is the warm welcome you'll receive from the relaxed owner, Florencia Molinuevo. As well as horse riding along the coast, dunes and pampas, there's superb birdwatching and opportunities for swimming.
