The behemoth capital Buenos Aires is reminiscent of a sophisticated modern European city: life races past the grand baroque building at dizzying speeds, and there are hip bars and chic boutiques dotted around the city, particularly in Recoleta and Palermo. But step inside a milonga and the mysterious rituals of the tango belong to a previous century. San Telmo is the oldest and most atmospheric district in the capital, south of the centre. The heart of the city is the central Plaza de Mayo, with the landmark Casa Rosada, while north of here is La City, the bank district.
