The behemoth capital Buenos Aires is reminiscent of a sophisticated modern European city: life races past the grand baroque building at dizzying speeds, and there are hip bars and chic boutiques dotted around the city, particularly in Recoleta and Palermo. But step inside a milonga and the mysterious rituals of the tango belong to a previous century. San Telmo is the oldest and most atmospheric district in the capital, south of the centre.
