Frankfurt strikes extended until Friday
Industrial action by ground controllers at Frankfurt airport, over wages, is set to continue until 11pm on Friday. An estimated 30% off flights have been cancelled as a result of the strike and further disruption is expected. Passengers are advised to check with their airline before travelling.
Passenger fined for opening emergency exit
A 29 year old man is facing a £400 fine for deliberately opening a plane’s emergency exit after the plane landed at Ho Chi Minh airport. The passenger reportedly opened the window door to allow a woman and child to leave the aircraft. The plane was taken out of service following the incident.
Rio Carnaval draws record crowds
The Cordao da Bola Preta parade, one of Rio de Janeiro’s most popular street parties, attracted record 2.2 million revellers this weekend, police have said. Despite the large crowds the event was reported as peaceful.
M25 coach tour surprise hit
The first coach tour of the 117 mile, M25 motorway, has proved unexpectedly popular with all seats for the tour now being sold. The Brighton & Hove Bus and Coach company, who run the tour, have arranged more dates for disappointed customers. The excursion, which costs £15 per head, takes in sights such as the Lakeside shopping centre, Heathrow airport Terminal Five and the Dartford Crossing Bridge.
Niagara Falls tightrope stunt to go ahead
Nik Wallenda will become the first person, in more than a century, to attempt to cross the gorge at Niagara Falls on a tightrope. Wallenda plans to walk across a two inch wide, 1,500ft long wire, while a rescue helicopter and dive teams stand by. The stunt is expected to take place in the summer.
Air Australia collapse leaves thousands stranded
Over 4,000 passengers have been left stranded after the Brisbane-based budget carrier, Air Australia, grounded all flights. Administrators have said that those without insurance are unlikely to receive compensation as the airline has no cash remaining for refunds. Air Australia flew to Hawaii, Bali and Thailand and also operated domestic routes from Melbourne, Brisbane and Perth.
Foreign office warns against travel to Maldives Capital
The Foreign office has warned British travellers against all but essential travel to Malé Island, following weeks of violent demonstrations due to political clashes.
