Courtyard of the Hotel Monasterio in Cuzco.

Furnished in the classic styles of the 1920s, the Hiram Bingham's carriages evoke a bygone era of civilised travel. Relax and enjoy these 'Palaces on Wheels' - as originator George Mortimer Pullman described them - as you wind your way through misty forests, up into the heart of the Andes Mountains.

Watch the Peruvian landscape go by from observation car of the Hiram Bingham.

Behind the glitz of Orient-Express's hotels and trains is a tourism business that recognises the importance of supporting the local communities in the areas in which they operate. We visited their Hotel Monasterio in Cuzco to find out more about the community projects they support.

About Hiram Bingham

Orient-Express
Machu Pichu - the lost city of the Incas.

When Hiram Bingham first visited Peru in 1908 he stopped briefly at the ruined Inca city of Choquequirao. The remote hilltop ruins caught Bingham's imagination and he became fascinated with the idea of other Inca cities yet to be discovered.

In 1911 he returned to the Andes with a team of archaeologists from Yale University. With the help of a local guide, Melchor Arteaga, the expedition trekked through the Andes to one of the biggest archaeological discoveries of the 20th-century - the lost city of Machu Picchu. Once the estate of the 15th-century Inca emperor Pachacuti, the ruins of Machu Picchu are now the most familiar symbol of the Inca World.
