Steve Davey - Travel Photography

Author and travel photography expert Steve Davey enlightens us to his reasons for writing the Travel Photography book

What was the inspiration behind the Travel Photography book?

I have written a number of features about Travel Photography and lead a number of photography tours. I wanted to write a book that allowed me to go into the detail that the subject needs, and also to inspire people to get more out of their travels. It is also a bit of a retrospective of my last dozen or so years in photography.

And who do you think will benefit from reading it?

Hopefully everyone who travels and has a camera. Even people who don’t travel but have a camera might get something out of it as well!

What do you believe is the single biggest error people making when taking photographs during their travels?

They don’t stop and think. People get so blown away by seeing something like the Taj Mahal for the first time that they just snap away without much thought or creativity. The result is a dull pictures that it is like so many other pictures, without any originality.

Can you tell us about the most interesting predicament you’ve got yourself into as a result of trying to get "the perfect shot"?

Quite a few: spent a couple of weeks hanging out of a an old Cessna in Southern Africa on a flying safari around five countries in Southern Africa, also leaped off a bridge in New Zealand with a camera taped to my hands.

Was it worth it?!

It is always worth it - the pictures were pretty good too!

In your opinion, where in the world offers the most diverse and interesting photographic opportunities, and why?

Has to be India. A fantastic country that manages to sit between the ancient and modern like no other place on earth.

If you had to sum up your new book in one line only, how would you do it?

A book that will help you get more out of your travels – and come away with some fantastic pictures as well.
