A descendant of the hardy souls who settled much of New England, Geoff spent his youth alternating between Portugal’s incessantly sunny Algarve and Maine’s occasionally sunny coast. Dallying in Japanese at Harvard but coming to his senses after his first exam, Geoff now directs international development initiatives for the Legatum Center at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He still makes the annual pilgrimage to Mt. Desert Island, where he family has summered off and on since 1603. An authority and frequently cited author on the history and social development of the Jesuit missions of Chiquitos, his writings, photography, and Web site on the region have won international acclaim.
