The world in the 1980s:

  • John Lennon was assassinated
  • Personal Computers (PC) were introduced
  • The hole in the ozone layer was discovered
  • The shipwreck of the Titanic was found
  • The fall of the Berlin Wall
  • The Latin America debt crisis
By the 1980s, travel to South America was becoming much more common. Some excerpts from our 1984 guide show that even in the last 30 years, there have been many changes in travel compared to today:

"There is as yet no easy, cheap way of flying directly to Latin America from Europe."

"Photography: Take as much film in from Europe and the USA as you can; it is expensive everywhere."

"For drinks, stick to beer, coke, minerals or coffee."

"Before you go: You should have a dental check-up and obtain a spare glasses prescription"

"The general prejudice previously reported against backpacks has virtually disappeared at least when not carried by those whom officials identify as 'hippies'."
