Pura Besakih and Gunung Agung

The holiest and most important temple on Bali is Pura Besakih, situated on the slopes of Bali's sacred Gunung Agung. Twinned with Gunung Batur to the northwest, Agung is the highest mountain on the island, rising to 3140 m. It is easiest to approach Besakih by taking the road north from Semarapura, a distance of 22 km. However, there are also two east-west roads, linking the Semarapura route to Besakih with Bangli in the west and Amlapura in the east. Although little public transport uses these routes, they are among the most beautiful drives in Bali, through verdant terraced rice paddies.
