First-time visitors are often at a loss when faced with the vast possibilities for travel in India. We have made a few suggestions for two- to three-week trips on the basis that some journeys will be flown and that tickets have been booked in advance (
figures in brackets are the number of nights we suggest you spend
). Two or three of these itineraries could be combined to make a longer trip. However, since travelling times are often quite long compared to Western standards, it is advisable to stick to a particular region rather than trying to cover too much ground in a short time. Listed throughout the book are reliable travel agencies who can make arrangements for a relatively small fee, saving you time and bother. Air tickets can be difficult to get at short notice for some trips, eg Leh-Delhi and Varanasi-Delhi. Railway tickets can be just as elusive, especially during school holidays. Indian railways are divided into regions, and despite computerized booking and the growing number of booking offices where All-India reservations can be made, there are still places where it is impossible to book tickets for travel to regions outside the one you are in. Allow more time if you are planning to travel entirely by road and rail. On the plus side, however, if you use overnight trains for longer journeys you can cover almost as much ground in the same time as flying.
