North of Agartala
Travelling outside Agartala is easy, with various one- to six-day tours organized by the tourism department and regular bus or jeep connections between towns. One section of the Agartala-Assam Highway is still heavily guarded by military forces and vehicles travel in convoy. Seek advice before travelling north through the state.
Unakoti and KailashaharTen kilometres from the friendly town of Kailashahar,
Unakoti
is the site of the largest bas-relief sculpture in India. Buses from Kailashahar drop off on the main road 1 km from the site but
finding transport back can be difficult; auto-rickshaws will do a round trip
. The seventh-century rock carvings are cut vertically into the hillside, the largest being an impressive 10-m-high depiction of Siva. The style is unusual, reminiscent of statues in South America more than representations of the Hindu pantheon. It is a quiet and peaceful place, unless you come during the
mela
(March/April).
Kailashahar
has a good market.
Some 220 km from Agartala, the Jampui Hills are a serene and forested area good for walking and tasting tribal culture. Between October and December the orange groves are heavy with fruit, while the famed orchids bloom between March and May. Very much off the foreign tourist trail, it's a worthy excursion if travelling into Tripura from the north.
