Northwest Maharashtra

The holy site of Nashik lies at the head of the Godavari River and is one of the locations of the 12-yearly Kumbh Mela. But the 'Ganges of the Deccan' has also watered a fast-growing city, as well as the vineyard of popular Indian winemaker Sula. Caves of ancient Buddhist relics lie just outside town. The town that was host to wartime British transfer camps, Deolali, from whose sanatoria we've gained the expression 'doolally', is nearby.
