Northern Madhya Pradesh

The boulder-strewn, thinly wooded Vindhya hills stretch across the north of the state, connecting some of the most fascinating historic monuments in central India. Foremost among them are the fascinating Tantric temples of Khajuraho, the sole raison d'ĂȘtre of a touristy village rendered slightly seedy by a cadre of boys who assume that anyone willing to endure the bus odyssey required to get here must be desperate for something. Further west, the riverside village of Orchha has all the ingredients for a relaxing break from the road, with palaces and lots of ruined mausoleums to explore, while Gwalior, a couple of hours by train from Agra, has one of the most awesome palace forts in the state.
