Eastern Madhya Pradesh

The modern city of Jabalpur makes a convenient jumping-off point for some of India's quintessential wildernesses. Kanha and Bandhavgarh national parks protect the landscapes that inspired Kipling's The Jungle Book and, despite the continued predations of poachers, Bandhavgarh at least still offers the possibility of tracking a tiger from the back of an elephant. Facilities for wildlife viewing in the parks are improving and a number of new safari resorts have opened: some massively luxurious, others working to involve local communities in the conservation effort.
