A mixture of heavy industrial belts and untouched forest, India's second-newest state remains terra incognita for most tourists, and the relative lack of infrastructure makes travelling here a genuine adventure. Though potentially hugely rewarding for anyone interested in tribal culture, parts of the state have in recent years been consumed by violent struggle between Maoist Naxalites and state-sponsored militias. It is imperative to check local conditions and wise to seek advice from your government before travelling beyond the main towns.
