Kashmir Valley

The beauty of the Vale of Kashmir, with its snow-dusted mountains looming in shades of purple above serene lakes and wildflower meadows, still has the power to reduce grown poets to tears. Nonetheless, the reality of military occupation pervades many aspects of daily life, with army camps, bunkers and checkposts positioned every few hundred metres along the highways and throughout the countryside. Travellers not dissuaded by the ever-present threat of violence or the official warnings to stay away can expect to encounter extremes of beauty and friendliness, not to mention hard salesmanship, in an economy that's been starved of tourist income for over 20 years.
