Vadodara and the old forts

The route south from Ahmedabad crosses the fertile alluvial plains of the Sabarmati and Mahi rivers before entering the Konkan region. The plains gradually give way south to broken hills while inland, parallel ridges reach 500-600 m where strategically placed atmospheric old forts are sited. Rice dominates agriculture further south, but ragi (finger millet) and pulses are also common. A pleasant day trip by car from Vadodara could include the forts of Champaner in the foothills, Pawagadh on a hilltop and Dabhoi Fort.
