Hong Kong

Hong Kong

Nestled within the Pearl River Delta, the city-state of Hong Kong gleams as a beacon of shiny skyscrapers on the South China Sea. Built up from a fishing village by the colonial British, Hong Kong today is a thriving international financial centre. Its international influence certainly belies its size but it is just this limitation on space that characterises Hong Kong as architects have been forced to expand up rather than out, making it the most vertical city in the world. Walk the narrow streets and you will be hit with the frenzy of the place as people dart around you grabbing lunch at street side restaurants or running for air conditioning respite from the steamy sub-tropical climate. If the pace proves too much you can head to the hills and check out the spectacle of the cityscape from Victoria Peak. Or why not get out of the city all together and take a ferry ride to the ‘lungs of Hong Kong’ – the islands of Lamma, Lantau and Cheung Chau  – to glimpse the quieter side to Hongkongers amongst mountainous greenery.
