Siem Reap

The nearest town to Angkor, Siem Reap is seldom considered as anything other than a service centre and it is true that without the temples, few people would ever find themselves here. The town has smartened itself up quite substantially in the past few years and, with the blossoming of hotels, restaurants and bars, it is now a pleasant place in its own right.

The Old Market area is the most touristy part of the town. Staying around here is recommended for independent travellers and those staying more than two or three days. A sprinkling of guesthouses are here but a much greater selection is offered just across the river, in the Wat Bo area.
