Chalinze lies 100 km to the west of Dar es Salaam, a small town, essentially a truckstop, and the main fuelling centre for travellers to north and south Tanzania (it's also a big HIV/AIDS centre). There are six petrol stations and hundreds of little bars - everyone's accommodated for. This makes Chalinze a buzzing place in the evenings, and a good place to break a journey for 30 minutes. Look out for the young men who sell little home-made toy trucks and buses on the roadside - replicas of the passing vehicles painted in the same colour and complete with company logos. About 200 m along the Dar road from the junction is a petrol station with a good restaurant, just look for the thatched roof. Most of the buses stop here for a quick break.
