Zululand Travel Guide, South Africa
This Zululand travel guide provides an extensive overview of the famous South African region.
Zululand, homeland of Shaka and one of the most evocative regions of South Africa, will forever be associated with the classic movie starring Michael Caine as the redoubtable British officer fighting Zulu warriors. Today, this region - extending from the northern bank of the Tugela River up to Mkhuze and Maputaland - is rather more peaceful and offers long, unspoilt beaches, excellent game reserves and a chance to experience traditional Zulu culture. Gone are the vast herds of migrating elephant, wildebeest and springbok, victim in part to the many battles fought over this wealthy province. Despite being one of the more traditional areas of South Africa, it has thriving industrial cities and vast areas of sugarcane and eucalyptus plantations. However, game reserves at St Lucia and Hluhluwe-Umfolozi are still natural magnets for tourists and around six per cent of KwaZulu Natal is managed by KZN Wildlife as conservation areas.
