Middle Atlas

From Fès or Meknès there are a number of interesting towns to visit in the Middle Atlas, possible stopovers to break a journey south to Marrakech, places to escape the summer heat and do some walking in hills and cedar forests. If you already know the more major sites and towns in Morocco well, you may want to take in some of the Middle Atlas towns instead. In a week you could comfortably combine visiting Fès and Meknès (plus Volubilis and Moulay Idriss) with a circuit southwards which might include overnights in Azrou, and then Ifrane or possibly Sefrou or Immouzer du Kandar. A loop southwest of Azrou would take you down to Khénifra and back up via the Aguelmane Azigza and Oum er Rbia, Morocco's largest river which flows into the Atlantic at Azzemour. Strategically located on the imperial cities to Tafilalelt road, next to magnificent mountains, Midelt at an altitude of 1525 m, looks as though it will have a good future as a base for hikers.
