Todra and Dadès gorges

The 'Road of the Thousand Kasbahs', as it is marketed, runs between Er Rachidia and Ouarzazate, through arid plains and oases with a backdrop of harsh mountain landscapes, where semi-nomadic Berbers pasture their flocks. The modern world has arrived, however: tourist buses and four-wheel drives bring their flocks to the growing villages at the start of the spectacular gorges, and the new buildings replacing the crumbling kasbahs these days use concrete breeze blocks rather than pisé. Nevertheless, there is plenty to see as well as walking opportunities along this route. Skoura is an oasis town with old kasbahs and El Kalaâ is the centre of Morocco's rose-growing industry. Those with four-wheel drives can try the bumpy mountain tracks leading into the Massif du Mgoun, or the rugged gorge-to-gorge route from Tineghir to Boumalne.
