The present-day Moroccan kingdom occupies the northwestern section of Africa. It is the African country closest to Europe, separated from Spain by the Straits of Gibraltar. The third largest country in the Maghreb (area: 703,000 sq km; Algeria and Libya are bigger), Morocco has beautiful, diverse landscapes, from arid desert to cedar forest, snow-topped mountains and spectacular gorges, oases and olive groves.
