North coast

There is a whole string of beaches along the north coast including Nyali, Kenyatta, Bamburi and Shanzu, with lots of hotels on the seashore immediately north of Mombasa. North of Mtwapa Creek are Kikambala and Vipingo beaches. The major attractions of Watamu Marine Park, Malindi and Lamu are further north. At these latter places there is much more choice for the budget traveller and anyone who wants to avoid the package tours. There are major historical sites at Kilifi, Malindi and Lamu. The north coast is also the location of the Malindi Marine Biosphere Reserve. This strip along the coast is 30 km long and 5 km wide and was gazetted in 1968, and covers an area of 213 sq km. It lies about 80 km north of Mombasa, and includes the Malindi Marine Park, the Watamu Marine Park and Mida Creek. The vegetation includes mangrove, palms, marine plants and various forms of algae that are home to crabs, corals, molluscs, cowrie and marine worms. Coral viewing is popular here, as are boat trips and watersports.
