South from Nairobi

The road from Nairobi to Mombasa is in a reasonable condition and parts of it have been recently resurfaced. The only rough bit is the last 100 km or so before Mombasa, which is a steady hill where the tar routinely gets chewed up by heavy trucks heading to Nairobi from Mombasa's port. An alternative from driving from Nairobi to the coast is taking the many frequent flights, which take little more than an hour and thanks to strong competition among the airlines on this route, are very affordable. If you've got lots of time, you can also take the (very slow) train. Another road heads due south to Lake Magadi via the prehistoric site at Olorgesailie.
