South of Suez

The Red Sea coast stretches down from Suez towards Hurghada, encompassing the resorts and enclaves around Ain Soukna and becoming progressively more beautiful as it extends further south. Inland from Zafarana, the Red Sea monasteries are Egypt's oldest and attract thousands of Coptic pilgrims to the desert hinterland. The plush and extensive resorts of El-Gouna, built on a succession of islands, tempt wealthy Cairenes and Western package tourists with their good diving and high-class dining. El-Gouna often feels more like Europe than it does Egypt, and is easily connected to the capital by twice-weekly flights or a five-hour bus ride.
