Northern Spain

Stretching from the Pyrenean foothills to the crinkle-cut shoreline of Galicia, the Atlantic coast of northern Spain has everything from rugged cliffs to sandy bays, fishing villages and holiday resorts. What it doesn’t have, though, is the almost guaranteed heat and sunshine of the Mediterranean Costas: a small price to pay, perhaps, for less crowded beaches and quieter resorts. But northern Spain appeals to families in search of more than sun, sand and sea. Lush broadleaf forests sweep up the flanks of the Cantabrian Mountains, with adventure-rich national parks like Picos de Europa just a short distance inland. There are also caves to be explored many with prehistoric paintings while a wonderful procession of cathedrals, churches and monuments mark the pilgrimage route to Santiago de Compostela.
