Spain and Portugal

With its stunning beaches, guaranteed sunshine and excellent value for money, it’s not hard to see why Spain is such a popular family holiday destination. And while Portugal has less in the way of beach resorts and nightlife than its Iberian neighbour, it’s still a friendly, fun place to take kids. Don’t be put off by the reputation of certain Costas and islands for crowded beaches and rowdy nightlife. You can always find smaller, quieter resorts or travel in the low season – particularly to year-round destinations like the Canary Islands. There are also plenty of opportunities for getting off the beaten track, from roaming the Spanish steppes of Extremadura to island hopping through the Azores. And if that sounds too taxing (or too far from the beach) there is always scope for adding an adventurous twist to a traditional seaside holiday – whether you combine northern Spain’s coast with some action- packed days in the Picos de Europa or head inland from the Costa del Sol on a cultural quest to Granada and Seville.
