Like Prague in the Czech Republic, Kraków in southern Poland is one of Eastern Europe’s essential city-break destinations. Spared the ravages of the Second World War, its Old Town is a medieval marvel that could almost have been lifted straight from the pages of a child’s storybook (there’s even a dragons den under the castle). Combine a day or two in Kraków with a visit to the nearby Wieliczka Salt Mine (not as dry and dull as you might imagine), then head south into the Carpathian Mountains.
