Iceland

Iceland puts the wild in wilderness. It’s an austere land riddled with suppurating mud pits, sulphurous steam vents and lava flows that resemble vast swathes of burned apple crumble. Waterfalls bloated with glacial silt retch into canyons, while fully-grown trees cower inches above ground to shelter from scything Arctic winds. It’s hardly your typical image of a family holiday paradise and yet Iceland, for all its austerity, is a superb destination for kids who have a sense of adventure. More back of beyond than back to the beach, the Land of Ice and Fire is Europe’s ultimate though admittedly quite pricey adventure playground, where you can search for whales one day and skidoo across an ice cap the next.
