Athens

You don’t need to be Athena (goddess of wisdom) to fathom why Greece is such a popular holiday destination for families. Boasting fantastic beaches, warm, sheltered seas and an easy-going atmosphere, the Greek Islands are legendary. With holiday bliss scattered so liberally throughout the Aegean Sea, the Greek capital is always going to have a hard time vying for attention. But spare a thought, and a day or two in your itinerary, for Athens. It’s a hot and chaotic city, but the ancient sites truly are amazing. And then there’s the Peloponnese, that large, spiky peninsula clinging to the mainland like a stubborn maple leaf. There are more crumbly old wonders here (so that’ll impress your history teacher), but the Peloponnese, like Halkidikí in the north, is also blessed with an enticing coastline of beaches, coves and laid-back tavernas.
