Britain

(c) Will Gray

Many visitors to Britain and Ireland (and quite a few of its residents) love to have a good moan about the weather and how expensive everything is. The fact remains, though, that these islands are not only incredibly beautiful, but they also squeeze more child-friendly beaches, cities and family attractions into one small, accessible region than anywhere in the world. Admittedly, the weather can be temperamental (or downright frustrating) at times, and there’s no denying that a British family holiday sometimes requires a fair degree of stoicism – but it doesn’t rain constantly. In any case, Britain and Ireland are great family holiday destinations whatever the weather. Kids can have just as much fun exploring rock pools and building sandcastles on a wind-strafed Cornish beach during winter as they can surfing on one during a summer heatwave. As for the cost issue, some of the best family holiday highlights in Britain and Ireland don’t cost a penny – cycling in Pembrokeshire or the Isle of Wight, visiting London’s Science or Natural History Museum, and finding the perfect picnic spot in the Lake District or Cotswolds to name just a few.
