Austria

Altogether now: Doe, a deer, a female deer; ray, a drop of golden sun… Welcome to the land of the family singalong. Resistance is utterly futile. If you’re not singing it, you’ll be humming it. And if it’s not a ditty from The Sound of Music it will be Falcos Rock Me Amadeus or, worse still, an impromptu yodelling session. Depending on their age, your children will either join in with gusto or shrink away in disgust. Salzburg, Austrians musical maestro-piece, is great fun for kids, while Vienna, with its Lipizzaner stallions, is somewhat more refined. But it’s only out on the mountain paths, the bike trails and the sparkling lakes that you’ll tune in to the some of the best sounds in Austria the rarefied silence of alpine wilderness.
